Hookworms

In the cat, hookworms (Ancyclostoma tubaeforme) are an often forgotten, but important intestinal parasite. Hookworms are passed from the queen to the kittens during nursing or are picked up from a contaminated environment (for example, eating grass or digging in contaminated soil).

Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke

The leading cause of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is leaving a dog in a hot car. Even on a mild day (75-80 degrees F), the temperature inside a car can raise up to 130 degrees rather quickly! Leaving a window slightly open will NOT prevent heat build-up. Leaving a dog in a car on a warm day is simply a risk to the dog's life!

Giardia - one cause of diarrhea..

Giardia is a protozoan, which is a microscopic organism slightly larger than a bacteria. Giardia lives in water - usually puddles, lakes and streams. Giardiasis is the most frequently occurring waterborne illness in North America.

Flea related diseases or conditions

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! Spring is a time of rebirth. We see young animals and plants budding and growing with the onset of the warm weather. Unfortunately, we also see some pests hatch out at the same time. Warmth and humidity allow the young adult FLEA to emerge from its cocoon (or pupa).

CAT SCRATCH DISEASE (formerly known as cat scratch fever)

Cat Scratch Disease is an uncommon disease of humans which is characterized by resolving skin rashes, lymph node enlargement, and low-grade fever and generalized muscle pain. It is a bacterial infection that you can get from being scratched or bitten by a cat, or in few instances a dog.

Cat Colds

Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus cause upper respiratory infections in cats of all ages. Rhinotracheitis is also known as Feline Herpes Virus I (FHV I). Our current feline distemper vaccine also contains some strains of rhino and calici to aid in protection against these viruses. Immunity from vaccine is incomplete.

WELLNESS TESTING FOR THE HEALTH OF YOUR PET

We all may wonder, "What do they do to get their dog to do that?" It’s really much easier than most people would think. This article is about how to get your dog to do anything you want to. We will start with step one.

Jogging With Dog

With warmer temperatures, the number of joggers on sidewalks and in parks will increase. Howard Erickson, professor of physiology at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, says the exercise will not only be good for you, but it offers benefits for your dog as well.

Dog's heartworm test

If you have not had your dog on heartworm prevention during the winter months, don’t forget to make an appointment for your dog's heartworm test. It may look like winter is here to stay, but spring is just around the corner! Dogs should be tested before starting them on any prevention program.

An ongoing goal of the Great Dane Health Foundation of America (GDHFA) is to offer a variety of material in order to help owners of pet dogs, as well as breeding dogs, ensure the health and well being of their animals. Our primary commitment is to raise funds that will help support research into the many diseases affecting the Great Dane breed.

He May Not Be Saying No ... It Could Be Mites

Think your dog is saying "NO" when he's shaking his head at your words? Perhaps not. Scratching ears or shaking the head a lot means a trip to the veterinarian, one that may offer relief for you and your pet, according to Dr. Jennifer L. Matousek, a veterinarian specializing in dermatology at the University of Illinois Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital in Urbana.

Food Allergy or Food Intolerance

Many people confuse food allergies and food intolerances, which may sometimes appear to be the same, but are actually very different. A food intolerance will often cause a digestive 'upset' of some sort, such as vomiting or diarrhea. A food allergy, on the other hand, causes an immune system reaction when the offending protein/substance is introduced.
