There are some recent research advances in many of these areas.
For example, just in the arena of canine cancers, there is a vaccine being developed
for malignant melonoma, a delivery system using B-12 with therapeutic radiation
for the treatment of lymphoma, inhibition of mast cell tumors using a
kinase inhibitor (Cheryl London's research at OSU) recently approved by the FDA,
and a  new test for hemangiosarcoma (Jaime Modiano's work in Denver).
As Dr. Modiano recently was quoted as saying: "It is not possible to breed out a cancer gene
and eliminate disease, but it may be possible to identify risk factors and breed them out,"
so participation in such research may mean an improved future for our breed.
